Unique {Pottery Barn} Monogram Jewelry Display Cloche

February 26, 2014

Now that Christmas seems like a thousand years ago, I thought I'd share with you an awesome favorite gift I received from my husband. As a vintage jewelry designer, I'm always on the look out for unique and beautiful ways to display my jewelry. Whether for photo shoots, or just a way to display my own personal handmade jewelry collection.  And this time I think Mr. CBD hit it just right.

I had put this little baby on my Christmas list, but since I only saw it in the Pottery Barn catalog and not up close and personal I wasn't sure whether I would really like it or not.  Well, can you guess the answer?

One problem I always come across is finding an attractive way to display my vintage charm bracelets.  This cloche was described as a bracelet holder, so I was hopeful.  And it did not disappoint.

Here it is without the cloche topper.

And I just l-o-v-e- the fact that it has my monogram on it.

And check out the detailing!

Isn't the stand beautiful?

And if you know me then you know that anything cloche-related is more than right up my alley.

Then when you add my vintage designs to it, well, it simply makes me smile.

So what do you think?

Did Mr. CBD do good
OR
WHAT?

Styling Bookcases and Moving

February 24, 2014

Getting your house ready for sale is a real pain in the you-know-what.  Everything is supposed is to look just so, and we all know that you can't actually LIVE that way.  A friend told me today that she could never keep her house like mine because it was too "pristine."  Ha!  It's not pristine, not by a long shot.  It's more like uncluttered.  Which is an accomplishment of epic proportions for me, the junk lover.

You really do start looking at your home with different eyes

once that

FOR SALE
sign

goes up in your front yard.

You start seeing things that have heretofore gone unnoticed.  Like the hideous hunter green carpet in the office.  Or the outdated floral wallpaper in the dining room.  Or the really messy hand prints surrounding just about every light fixture in the entire house.  (Pssst: Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work wonders on that dilemma.)

While in the process of getting the house ready for sale, I told my husband that we had to get new living room and dining room carpet.  Because if we didn't, well then, we'd be the house with the icky carpet.  That's what people would remember, what they'd take away with them once they left our house behind.  I'm happy to say that we replaced the old carpet with some very beautiful new carpet in a neutral tone.

As for that upstairs hallway bookcase I showed you recently here, I got around to styling it a bit.
And while still not my best work, I think I made a difference for the better.

Here it is before.

And here it is after.

I used the little red suitcases to compliment the red in some of the botanicals.
 {Get the free download here.

That's also why I threw in my son's Rubik's Cube.  I tried to be playful with it, since it does still house children's books, and sits just outside their bedrooms.

I'm no expert, but I do know you're suppose to mix books with other decor, and place the books in different positions, rather than just straight up and down.  I also tried to pick some of their nicer-looking, larger books.

At this point I don't have much decor to choose from since most of it is in storage!  Grrr!

But all things considered I'm happy with how it turned out.

There are so many pretty bookcases on line that you could go cross-eyed just trying to look at all of them.  I've started a

Pinterest Page

dedicated to bookcases in an attempt to corral at least a few of them in one place and use them for future styling inspiration.

Do you have any special styling tips you use for your bookcases?

St. Patrick's Day Preview: Irish Dance Charm Necklace

February 16, 2014

It feels like I haven't shared any of my jewelry with you in ages so here's a fairly recent creation.  As far as jewelry making goes, besides vintage jewelry designs, I'm known for my Irish dance charm bracelets.  But this big ol' teardrop-shaped green vintage stone prompted me to make my very first Irish dance charm NECKLACE!

I added a celtic knot charm, as well as a plate-of-spaghetti-and-meatballs charm.  Yes, you read that right, spaghetti and meatballs. I got the charm from a dear friend, author Brenna Briggs.  She writes the Liffey Rivers Girl Detective Irish Dancer Mysteries.  My daughter loves all her books!
The charm has a special significance for any Irish dancer who follows the main character, Liffey Rivers, on her Irish dance adventures.  I have one of these charms on my Irish dance charm bracelet, as well.  I wear the jewelry to my daughter's dance competitions for good luck!

Isn't she beautiful?  She's a vintage Our Lady of Knock rosary connector.  It's a super-rare find that arrived in one of my ebay vintage medal auction lots.  Our Lady of Knock is the name given to the Virgin Mary who people say appeared at the church of Saint John the Baptist in Knock, County Mayo, Ireland in 1879.

And of course you gotta have bling so I added some sparkly rhinestones.

Even the toggle clasp is made up of four leaf clovers and rhinestones.

I've had many requests for Irish dance charm bracelets over the past few months, but due to an overwhelming amount of personal stuff going on I haven't been able to make any.  I'm so happy for the positive following, though, and hope to start keeping up a bit more
with the demand in the coming months.  There's always an upswing in demand around St. Patrick's Day (March 17th).  And believe me, I'll be very happy to see March when it rolls around ~ spring here in the U.S.!

I can't believe I'm saying this but we are expecting another six inches of snow tomorrow.

I think I can now say that I'm

officially

finished

with

winter.

How about you?

More importantly, do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day?

Dried Hydrangeas and Anthropologie Pitcher

February 12, 2014

Anthropologie Surroyal pitcher antler vase coffee table

Things have been so cold and snowy in so many parts of the U.S. this winter that I think we're all ready for a little bit of spring. I know I am. So the other day, as the sunlight was shining through the living room windows, I made myself stop and take a few pictures of my favorite flowers as a reminder of better things to come.

These came from the hydrangea bushes in our back yard, planted lovingly for me by my husband. There weren't any when we moved here. Now there are about fifteen. And this past summer, blessed by rain, they all bloomed spectacularly.

This beautiful Anthropologie Surroyal pitcher was a birthday gift to myself last year around this time. Total clearance item I lucked out in finding. It works great with a number of different types of flowers, but we all know hydrangeas are my all-time favorite. I'm currently waiting for spring with bated breath. How about you?

Well, that's it until next time, friends!

How to Stage Your Home for Sale: Free Botanical Prints Download

February 8, 2014

Well, I guess it's finally time for me to 'fess up.

Over the next few months there will be some big changes coming my way,

 namely, a M-O-V-E.

moving house Sometimes you need more than Monopoly to keep the family unit functioning.

As in "we're moving."

As in "we're putting our house up for sale."

 As in "Help!"

I haven't mentioned it here although I've known it for quite some time.  Mainly because it's been a bit heartbreaking.  It wasn't a planned move.  It was a life-just-kind-of-happened-and-now-we-have-to-move move.  Life is funny that way.  One day it decides to throw you a curve ball and you find yourself in the position of having to keep the household running while your husband is working two and a half hours away in another state.  You find yourself having to vet realtors (both here and in the new state) to find the best ones for your family's needs. You find yourself having to get the house ready for sale while continuing to homeschool your youngest child. And the list goes on.

But you know what?
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what state we're in.
It doesn't even matter what house we're in.
All that matters is that we're together.

That's exactly what we told the kids as soon as we knew that moving was our new reality.  It's been a while coming, as my husband has been living near his new job and coming home on the weekends for over a year now.  But it's time to get this party started and get us all together under one roof again.  And I hope you'll come along with us for the ride.

I must say that as a DIY home décor blogger I've been feeling a bit out of sorts throughout this whole process.  The goal is to de-junk the house so that it is clean and uncluttered.  But what if you're a thrift store junkie who loves picking up old things by the side of the road like me?

The "stager" {read: person who comes in and critiques your decorating style} has been here and has shared his expertise about how we should decorate the house if we want it to sell.  I have to be honest and say that I was pretty pleased with myself when he basically said that I had already done an excellent job and that he had only minor suggestions.  But then I got to thinking, wondering if he tells that to all his clients so that they won't be really mad at him when he ultimately suggests totally rearranging the living room {or family room, or den, etc.) somewhere down the line.

But either way, this will be our third big move as a married couple with children.  And I can tell you that the decorating advice has not changed one bit from what they told us before our first move in 2000:

Less is more.

So.

We have not one, but two storage spaces.

In addition, our very spacious basement storage room is busting at the seams.

All this, even after I have culled, and sold, and thrown out and donated.

It's enough to drive you crazy.  But life goes on.

Moving forward I'll be sharing little tidbits here and there about this whole moving process, but today I wanted to share some really beautiful, FREE botanical print downloads. I stumbled across them while frantically searching for free artwork to put in our upstairs hallway.  Yes, I did this the day before the professional photographer was scheduled to arrive and take the listing photos of the house.

The frames used to be filled with our three children's school photos and original artwork.  Why change them out?  Because I was told to take down anything "with eyes."  Translation: take down all your family photos.  That, to me, is just plain sad.  In a way I get it (let the new people picture themselves in the house, not you and your umpteen children).  But on another level I think you should be able to leave your family photos on display.  The same family photos that tell the story of a happy family, a happy life that's been cultivated in this very house.

Despite my personal preference, the stager won out, at least with regard to these particular family photos.  And you know what?  I'm actually loving the new look!

Aren't they fabulous?  I admit I clearly need to restyle that old bookcase. It's had children's books in it since, well, since we've had kids!  (Fourteen years.)  But otherwise I'm thrilled with the outcome.

The frames were an inexpensive find many years ago, I think at Michael's.  You can "pop" the acrylic out very easily and insert whatever you want inside it.  They've done a great job holding Disney portraits (think: Nemo, Princesses, etc.) as well as the kids' school pictures and artwork over the years. But for now, I think these botanical prints look marvelous.

It's amazing what free artwork is out there for the taking.  I found these beauties by googling "free botanical print download."  The search results led me to The Crafty Nest Blog.  Hop on over there to get the skinny on how to download this beautiful, four volume German book entitled Kohler's Medizinal-Pflanzen, published in 1887.  According to The Crafty Nest, Botanicus.org scanned the nearly 300 drawings and made them available to download for free!  Yay!

Note:  I was unable to download individual pages, so I just downloaded the whole book and then went through it page by page, printing whatever caught my fancy.  It was fun scrolling through and seeing all the incredible vintage drawings.  I hope you have fun with it!

Once I've restyled the bookcase completely I will be sure to post an update.

Since moving will be the main focus of my life over the next couple of months, my blog posts will be a reflection of that.  I'm so happy to be able to share the experience with you.  I mean, it's always nicer when a friend comes along for the ride, wouldn't you agree?
